Monsters U and World War Z kills White House Down at Box Office

Monsters University has held strong grabbing another $46 million and holding the number 1 spot.  The Heat buddy comedy with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy took home a healthy $40 million.  Literally matching it's budget in it's first week.

White House Down bombed at only $25 million dollars.. Which was 4th.  World War Z killed it's way to another $29 million in it's 2nd week.

Monsters U has taken in $171 million in USA dollars and another $129 million internationally.  That's $300 million already for a film still at number 1.  World War Z has taken a total of $123 million  in US bank and another $135 in overseas money.  That makes it a big time hit at $259 million total.

The Man Of Steel continues to strong no signs of going away.  It landed at $20.8 million more dollars.  That will put it at $248 million in the USA.  And another $271 million overseas.  That's a total of $520 million dollars.  That makes it the biggest Superman movie ever.  Up next Batman (Keaton) (USA only) It's dusted it worldwide by $120 million already.  Another 2 days it should over take it.  It won't catch The Dark Knight Rises.  But, my guess will be $600-$700 million total.  He's back so get ready for the sequels.

Monsters U, World War Z hold Strong at Box Office

According to box office estimates Monsters and Zombies rule the box office for Friday (starting the new box office weekend).

Monsters University is holding steady at 1) with a large $14 million haul.  That raises it's total to $139 million in the USA and $193 million worldwide.

World War Z is still strong with another $8.9 million dollars.  Which is good for 4th place behind new action flick White House Down.  Which grabbed $9 million.  White House Down may pull around $30 million for it's opening weekend.  That's going to be 3rd (maybe)(World War Z is only $200,000 behind of 3rd).  War Z has grossed at total of $102 million in the USA and another $49 million overseas.  A strong $151 million haul overall.

The Man of Steel continues to be strong.  It swooped in with another $6 million on it's way to around $20 million for the weekend.  It has grossed $233 million in the USA and $180 overseas.  Man Of Steel is now the largest grossing Superman movie ever and has $422 million overall.

The female team up The Heat has second at $13.6 million.

None of the weekend totals have a per screen average that is just off the charts.

In this modern-day twist on Washington Irving's classic, ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen") is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity's last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie, "42," "Shame," "American Violet") to unravel a mystery that dates back to the founding fathers.

On Sept. 17, the Tuesday night comedy block is back with two new additions - DADS (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) and BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) - and new seasons of NEW GIRL (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) and THE MINDY PROJECT (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT). BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), from Emmy Award-winning writer/producers Dan Goor and Michael Schur ("Parks and Recreation") and starring Emmy Award winners Andy Samberg ("Saturday Night Live") and Andre Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age," "Homicide: Life on the Street"), is a new single-camera workplace comedy about what happens when a hotshot detective (Samberg) gets a new captain (Braugher) with a lot to prove.

Abrams ("Fringe," "Lost," the "Star Trek" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises) and creator J.H. Wyman ("Fringe," "The Mexican") and starring Karl Urban ("Star Trek") and Michael Ealy ("Sleeper Cell," "Common Law"), ALMOST HUMAN is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop (Urban) is forced to pair with a part-human robot (Ealy) as they fight crime in a futuristic new world.

Under The Dome has big ratings

CBS' Stephen King adaptation scored pretty big rating numbers. It was watched by 13.14 million people last night. Pretty good debut for a summer tv show of any kind. Written by Brian K. Vaughan, this series stars Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Dean Norris, Jolene Purdy, Nicholas Strong, Britt Robertson, Aisha Hinds, Alex Koch, Natalie Martinez and Colin Ford.

Willow Creek Trailer!

This is directed by Bobcat Goldthwait (yes, that one).

Lex Luthor could be Mark Strong?

Rumors are starting to fly that Mark Strong (Kick-Ass, Green Lantern) is possibly being looked at for the Man of Steel sequel. A supposed rumor from CBN (cosmicbooknews.com) says both Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder are wanting Strong for the part as Superman's main baddie. A little odd considering he played Sinestro in The Green Lantern. David Goyer is working on script and they are on a fast track for Summer 2015.

World War Z Sequel Moving Forward

The Hollywood Reporter is dropping the knowledge that Paramount and Brad Pitt are moving ahead to get a sequel to World War Z done. The movie opened to a huge $111 million worldwide weekend. Yeah, that will get any sequel going.....

Zombies vs Monsters at the Box Office!! Numbers are in!

The final estimates for the weekend are in.  Monsters University grabbed a monster $82 million at the box office.  A massive number for any flick.

It would take a monster effort to hold off the country's love for zombies.  Brad Pitt's World War Z killed it's way to $66 million dollars.  In most weekends that would have been plenty to have grabbed the number 1 spot.  Does make you wonder about opening against Monsters University.

Man Of Steel continues to show it can hold it's own during a record setting June.  It swooped in with $41 million dollars.  And still averaged $9,000 per screen.  Wow.  That's $210 million for the Justice League member and $283 million world wide.  Some estimates are saying with promos and box office it's made $225 million in profit already.

Fast and Furious 6 grabbed $4.7 million.  It has grossed $228 million in the USA and a insane $645 million worldwide.

Hannibal: The Greatest Show You've Never Watched

I have made no bones about the fact that I love NBC's Hannibal.  I had a lot of concerns about this show when I heard it was coming.  None of which were people NOT watching.  That has actually shocked me.

This is me giving you a couple reasons to go see the first season.  So you can support it in it's second season.

Now that NBC has renewed this fantastic show you can catch up with it.

1) Hugh Dancy and Will Graham.  I was not familiar with Hugh Dancy.  But, he is a fantastic actor.  He is portraying Will Graham as a unstable, brooding, likable, and brilliant member of a FBI team.  He is Dexter as a FBI agent if Dexter was depressed and had less of a comedic flare.  This show could be about him and it would be worth watching alone. He is completely on the edge of breaking but, you can not stop pulling for him.  If he does not win a Emmy then they need to quit giving the award out.

2) Visually the most stunning show on TV.  The thing that struck me from episode 1 is the actual literal look of the show.  The camera angles, shots, scenes are unique and beautiful.  It's surprisingly gory for network TV.  It gives The Walking Dead a run for it's money any day.  The use of the elk, clouds, and even Dr. Lecter's office is something to behold. The aftermath of the killings themselves is visually wonderful.

3) Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal.  Ok, I admit it took me about 3 episodes to warm up to his brand of being Hannibal.  He's got a different accent then Anthony Hopkins.  It's extremely rough.  However, after a few episodes he becomes almost a anti-hero.  His constant banter with Will Graham and Jack Crawford is fantastic.  He has a answer for most everything.  And toward the end of the season you realize he is the essence of evil itself.  Evil, twisting, plotting, and some how still likable.  He is not over the top.  Almost scary in his calmness.

4) Guest Stars.  Gillian Anderson (X-Files), Eddie Izzard (who plays a fantastic Hannibal like killer), and the every episode starring Laurence Fishburne are all solid and at times fantastic.

5) The Writing.  I do not remember a show that has writing week in and week out this good.  Every episode has been essentially a 45 minute movie.  And a damn good one.  It forces you to concentrate on the show just from sheer back and forth between the actors during conversation.  This is NOT Duck Dynasty.  Or the taxing arguing of The Walking Dead.  This is real, genuine, hardcore acting.  The dialog is brilliant.

I believe Hannibal will actually get picked up eventually after next season by a cable channel.  It simply will not pull the numbers for NBC.  However, it would go great right before or after Bates Motel on A and E.  Or even after The Walking Dead.  It's numbers would be right in line for being most cable channel's top show.

World War Z killing Zombies and Box Office!

Been a while since a horror movie (sort of) opened with anything like Brad Pitt's World War Z.  The Friday totals are rolling in and the movie has killed the box office with a monster $25 million dollar opening.

That's good for 2nd place (we can tell it's summer time).  Monsters University took advantage of the kids being out of school with a huge $30 million.  Both Monsters and War are cruising toward $50 million and up weekends.

In 3rd place Man Of Steel is still the overall world wide movie.  Raking in a additional $12.5 million Friday and will probably do another $30 million total for the weekend.  It's worldwide is up around $345 million.

Official Empire State Trailer!

This looks like a pretty good flick. Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth.

The much anticipated Vin Diesel sequel will be released September 6th.

Downey Jr. Back for Avengers 2 and 3!

Marvel.Com has broken the news that Robert Downey Jr. will return to play Iron Man in the Avengers 2 and 3. No word on either financial agreements or news of a Iron Man 4 movie.

Poltergeist Reboot Coming?

MGM and Fox 2000 is teaming up to fund and distribute a reboot to Poltergeist. The original dropped in 1982 and is a classic. The premise is a struggling family looking to make ends meet when they move to home in the suburbs. A angry spirit then kidnaps they're daughter (haven't we seen this before?). Gil Kenan ("Monster House") is set to direct from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire ("Oz: The Great and Powerful"). Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Roy Lee are set to produce with shooting to begin this Fall.

Assassin's Creed is slated for June 19, 2015. X Men Days of Future Past is coming on May 23, 2014. Dawn of Planet of the Apes is July 18th 2014.

Man Of Steel 2 and Justice League on Fast Track?

Reports are coming out now that the massive June record success of Man Of Steel has now lit a fire under
Warner Bros. tails.

According to "knowledgeable people close to the studio" (Credit: Wall Street Journal) Warner Bros. will fast track Man of Steel 2 and The Justice League.  How fast?  How about 2014 for MOS2 and 2015 for the Justice League.

Personally, if they can not get Christian Bale as Batman I will have a hard time buying in.  However, as long as it's a Nolan/Snyder/Goyer production I will be all in as a fan.

Final Man Of Steel Box Office Updates

 Newest Update 12:15pm CDT:

Man of Steel final estimates are in for the first 4 day run.  Man of Steel grabbed $125 million in the United States and a additional $71 million dollars overseas.  That is a total of $196 million in it's first 4 days.

That makes it the largest opening in June Box Office History.  Beating Toy Story 3 in the 3 day head to head $110 million to $113 million.  It looks as if the Man Of Steel has finally relaunched Superman.

Update: Man of Steel's international totals are starting to roll in. UK grabbed up an additional $5.2 million alone. That sets up Man Of Steel at $25.7 million in Overseas cash. Throw in a total of $56 million in the States. And it grossed $82 million through Friday. Yeah, Friday.

News continues to trickle in from the Friday box office estimates. With Man Of Steel grabbing somewhere around $45 million dollars on Friday.

Estimates are now coming in around $120 million for Friday-Sunday. And $132 million with Wal Mart's advance screenings.

Man Of Steel Review

It's been a really LONG time since I have reviewed anything. Simply have not had the time. However, there is 2 films I said come hell or high water I will catch in the theater this summer. Man Of Steel and World War Z. In back to back weeks no less.
I have to start this by confessing I am in my late 30's. So I hold a special place for all the Christopher Reeve's Superman movies. I am also a big Smallville fan. Yeah, kind of cheesy and teeny but, when you combine old cameo's, original Superman music it became one of my favorite series of all time. So I came with a lot of hope for the Christopher Nolan produced and Zack Snyder directed Man Of Steel.
This is a different take on Superman. While the old movies and the Smallville series stuck somewhat close to each other the Man Of Steel film went a different direction. And frankly, it was a breath of fresh air. I was hoping for a Dark Knight dark and grittier movie and I got it. There is space battles, armour, aliens. And we get a real sense of how the world would react not so much to a superhero but, to a alien.
The look of this movie is very grey and almost dirty on screen. Not the bright colors of the old movies. There is no corny one liners and jokes. It was serious business. Henry Cavill does a solid job donning the cape. I will say they finally cast a guy that looks like the part. He has to be rocked up at about 230lbs. of pure whip ass. Russell Crowe got a lot of screen time as Jor-El and was very good playing the part of Supes' dear old dad. Russell owns the Jor-El character and never makes you think "why are you on screen yet again?". He has a lot of involvement.
The guy that steals the movie however, is Michael Shannon as Zod. This guy captures the angst, anger, and emotion of a man trying to re-birth his planet with all of his being. Now, my biggest issue was Amy Adams. She just looked out of place and miscast as Lois Lane. Lois was a likable smart ass. Amy Adams did not portray anything likable. There was nothing that led you to want to see her end of as Superman's everything. There is plenty of action and one hell of a fight between Superman and Zod that will fill the appetite of most fans. I have to say everything has a much different look than it's old 70's and 80's counterpart movies. This is Nolan and Snyder's baby. And it has they're style through and through. They're vision is much different. That may put some people off if they're looking for that easy going hokey nerdy farm boy thing.
Nolan delivers another fine film and does what he does best. He makes a superhero movie feel like a REAL movie. That's why I like the Nolan versions because they're less hokey and kiddie feeling than the Marvel movies.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 axes. It loses .5 for Amy Adams alone.

Man of Steel Soars on Thursday at Box Office

It is being reported today that the new version of Superman "Man Of Steel" has swooped into the box office with a healthy $21 million dollars. That is with special Wal-Mart screenings and midnight showings. The initial predictions are between $80-$100 million for the 4 day haul. Iron Man 3 by grabbed $15 million off of early showings. I went to see it today in East Texas around 3:30pm in 3D and there were maybe 20 people in the theater.

The Purge owns the Box Office!

It has been a while since horror has owned a massive box office tally. The Purge showed up with monster numbers for a horror movie. The Ethan Hawke led flick about 1 day used to get rid of people you want to "purge" out of your life grabbed a healthy $36 million dollars at the box office. With a $3 million dollar budget it is already a sizable hit. The Fast and Furious 6 pulled another $19.7 million dollars. Grabbing a insane $200 million domestically and $584 million worldwide. Now You See Me held strong with $19.5 million bringing it's total to a respectable $61 million in two weeks. Another week and it will probably turn a profit. After Earth continued to fall. Was number 7 at the box office with $11 million. And a total of $46 million in two weeks. However, what will be lost is the massive $48 million it grabbed overseas. Totally a now more respectable $95 million in two weeks. It will at least break even before hauling in dvd sales, etc.

Man of Steel Has Almost Made It's Budget Back Already?

I have no idea why I like box office numbers but, I do. And this tidbit seemed interesting. According to The Hollywood Reporter The Man Of Steel is nearing making it's budget back already. It seems the superhero hitched himself to over 100 global product partners for a tally equaling $170 million dollars. Product placement with the likes of Gillette, Mattel, Walmart, Fisher Price, Lego, Converse, Chrysler, Hershey, Nokia, Sears, Carl's Jr., Roebuck & Co., Hardee, Kellogg, Kinetics, Warby Parker and even the U.S. Army National Guard. Very interesting that before Superman actually makes a single theater sales ticket back it will have nearly broke even. Throw in DVD sales later. And it will likely be one of the bigger hits ever.

Finally Jason Voorhees Returns?

I have waited far too long for there to be a return to Camp Crystal Lake. Jason Voorhees may finally get his return. According to the The Hollywood Reporter the Friday the 13th franchise is returning to Paramount. With 5 years to enjoy the film rights something has to give. We can not endure yet another line of dvds. Below is the press release: Per THR: The original Friday was made in 1980 by producer Sean Cunningham with investments from Boston theater owners. Paramount got domestic distribution rights; Warners had international. Eventually, the rights reverted back to Cunningham, who took them to New Line Cinema in the 1990s as part of an attempt to jumpstart a Freddy vs. Jason movie (with the villain from A Nightmare on Elm Street). That process took more than 10 years, and in the meantime, New Line made two other Friday the 13th movies. When it came time for New Line, now part of Warner Bros., to develop a Friday remake/reboot, it was revealed that Paramount had certain rights to the original and had to be brought in as 50-50 partners. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes ended up producing 2009's Friday the 13th, which grossed a respectable $91 million for Paramount and Warners on a budget of less than $20 million.
